In the Mirror "Doppler: Andante and Rondo op.25"

About Franz Doppler

Franz Doppler (1821-1883) was a Hungarian-Austrian composer, conductor and flutist. He is known to all flutists as the composer of the famous "Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy". At the age of 18, he became the principal flute of the Budapest Opera House, and later played at the Vienna Court Opera House.1He became the principal flute player of the symphony orchestra, and then rose to the position of principal conductor. Nowadays, his works are mostly focused on the flute, but at that time,Opera, balletStage music such as2He was highly regarded as a composer of the Hungarian Rhapsodies. He was also a pupil of Liszt, and is known for arranging the six Hungarian Rhapsodies for orchestra under Liszt's guidance.

About Karl Doppler

He had a younger brother, Karl Doppler (1825-1900), who was four years younger than him. He was also a virtuoso flute player.3The two of them took Europe by storm as the "Virtuoso Flute Brothers." Franz wrote a duet for the two of them.4He left behind over 10 pieces, with "Andante and Rondo op. 25" being known as his masterpiece.

The Doppler Brothers Duo's Unusual Features

This brother duo had a unique feature. The younger brother, Karl, was left-handed and played the flute backwards. So when the two of them performed on stage, it was as if they were reflecting each other in a mirror, which enhanced their virtuoso and well-coordinated performance. They were also performers who "showed off."

I found a performance on YouTube that gives a glimpse of this, so I'd like to introduce it to you.

Isn't that interesting?

My recent recommendation is the performance of Pahud and Adrian, who are disciples of Devonte. They are really good.

Bonus: My own performance

Finally, I'll include my own performance as a little something to cheer you up. In May 2025Ms. Yuko Hattori7This was recorded when I visited his home. It was recorded in one take, so there are a lot of mistakes, but I hope you enjoy it.
