I went to see Puccini’s opera Suor Angelica.
An acquaintance of mine, conductor Hirofumi Yoshida (principal permanent conductor of the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Italy), returned from Italy to conduct the performance.
The first half featured a hilarious conversation with the dentist who organized the event.
I did not have much time today, though, so all we managed was a quick “Long time no see!” and a handshake as we passed each other in the restroom.
I had a friend who married last year, then became depressed and took a leave of absence before resigning in the spring. Having just received the news of her suicide, this opera felt all too timely, and I became nauseated on the way home.
It really got to me.
