The theme song for the NHK morning drama Massan, currently being broadcast, is “Mugi no Uta,” composed by Miyuki Nakajima. I heard somewhere that it resembles the national anthem of the Soviet Union, so I immediately looked into it. I do not watch Massan, so I did not know the song at all.
First, here is the chorus of “Mugi no Uta”:
It certainly sounds somehow familiar. When I wondered where I had heard it, it turned out that the chorus of the Soviet national anthem—the national anthem of the Russian Federation—seems very similar. Here it is:
Indeed, they certainly are similar. You could say that the first 2 measures are almost the same. Still, it is only 2 measures…. But because it is the chorus, that is probably why it leaves such a strong impression.
