According to Austrian news reports and other sources, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, who retired in the 1970s, had been regarded alongside Maria Callas and others as one of the greatest soprano singers of the 20th century. She died on the 3rd at her home in Schruns, Vorarlberg, western Austria. She was 90 years old. The cause of death was unknown.
Born in Jarocin, now in Poland, in 15, December, she was discovered as a talent at a music school in Berlin and made her operatic debut there in 38.
She excelled in operas by Mozart and others and performed at the Vienna State Opera and elsewhere. She appeared with distinguished conductors such as Karajan and Furtwängler, and at leading European musical events including the Salzburg Festival.
