The draft JIS X 9252 standard is based on ISO/IEC 29184, Online privacy notice and consent.1 It describes how to write the documents known in Japan as “privacy policies” that inform individuals about the collection and use of personal information and related data (notices), and, when consent is used as the basis for processing, how to obtain consent based on those notices. The provisions concerning how notices are written and presented should be used even when consent is not the basis for processing.

The development of ISO/IEC 29184 began with guidelines from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as the source document (a document containing no “shall” requirements). In response to comments from the EDPB, many instances of “should” were changed to “shall,” strengthening the standard. It has now been translated into Japanese and is moving toward publication as a JIS standard.
