On Friday, January 20, the JIS version of “ISO/IEC 29184 Online privacy notice and consent,” “JIS X 9252:2023 Information technology—Online privacy notice and consent,” was published. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to JIPDEC, which served as the secretariat of the JIS draft development committee; the experts who participated in the deliberations; the officials responsible at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and at JSA; the members of the Information Technology Technical Committee of the Second Standardization Board of the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee, who reviewed the submitted draft; and everyone else involved who contributed their efforts.
JIS X 9252 sets out, as a standard, how to write notices concerning the handling of personal information—often called privacy policies in Japan—and how to obtain consent when consent is used as the basis for processing. It originated as guidelines from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which were brought to ISO and developed into an international standard through international deliberations involving organizations including the EDPB. The international standard was then brought back to Japan and made into a JIS standard. Since a “notice” is required in every case, it is no exaggeration to say that this standard is relevant to every business operator. I very much hope you will obtain a copy.
