For the first time in a long while, I tried to work with Smalltalk and looked into various implementations. There are even ones that run on Java. The Object Browser is rather poor, but it may still be usable. It can generate Java. There are also ones that can generate C.
The implementation that can generate Java is called Talk 2. Naturally, it is open source. Its Object Browser lets you view both Java and Smalltalk code. The sheer volume of Java code is striking, though.
It would be nice if I remembered Smalltalk perfectly, but I was appalled to find that I had forgotten it completely. Well, it has been 15 years since I last used VisualAge, so that cannot be helped. I had no choice but to order

In the Squeak world, there is also Seaside, a framework for the web. I think I will take a look.
Then again, having forgotten this much, I might as well start Python from zero…
