It has truly been a long time. How many years has it been?
The reason I felt like going was that my daughter will be playing flute in her elementary school brass band. Because she is quite small, it is difficult for her to hold a regular flute in the proper position. So she needs a curved headjoint. First, I asked at the wind-instrument section on the 3rd floor whether they had a curved flute headjoint. I was told it would need to be ordered and would cost 20,000¥5,000. I thought the clerk who answered immediately was impressive. After buying a bag for the flute case and a cleaning kit, I went to the basement and bought about 3 scores: Bartók’s Hungarian Peasant Dances, Ikuma Dan’s Sonata for Flute and Piano, and Shin-ichiro Ikebe’s Silence… Oh, a Cuckoo Somewhere.
After that, I walked through Ginza to collect my luggage from the Imperial Hotel. When I came out of the Imperial Hotel, people were just emerging from the Tokyo Takarazuka Theatre. Sunset comes early near the winter solstice, and the sight of people pouring out into the already dark street reminded me of a haiku by Kyu-e Nakao.
Short winter day—everyone leaving the art museum
Christmas is just around the corner.
