United Kingdom: Bus Operator Introduces Digital IDs for Students

National Express West Midlands has partnered with digital identity company Yoti and begun accepting digital student IDs on its buses. Students can download a free student ID and use it as proof of student status on National Express buses in the West Midlands and Coventry. The new system will:

  • Enable revenue protection officers to verify student discount tickets more quickly
  • Improve the passenger experience

These benefits are expected to be achieved.

United Kingdom: Update to the Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework

The UK government has pre-released the latest version of its digital identity and attributes trust framework. The main updates since the beta version released in June 2022 are as follows:

  • Updated inclusion monitoring and data-sharing mechanisms

EU: European Commission Adopts Digital ID Wallet Rules for Rollout by the End of 2026

On November 28, 2023, the European Commission adopted key rules concerning the European Digital Identity (eID) Wallet. As part of the European Digital Identity Framework, these rules provide concrete guidance for Member States to introduce digital wallets by the end of 2026.

EU: European Commission Publishes 5 New Draft Implementing Acts Related to Digital Wallets

On November 29 local time, draft implementing acts outlining the rigorous legal specifications required for the EU Digital Identity Wallet were opened for public comment. 5 implementing acts had already been published this summer and adopted by the European Commission, establishing rules for the core functions and certification of European Digital Identity Wallets under the European Digital Identity Framework.

Jordan: Digital ID Verification Service Launched for Citizens Abroad

IrisGuard UK has partnered with Jordan’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship (MODEE), Jordan Post, VFS Global, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates to launch a new service.

Its main features are as follows:

  • Jordanians residing in the United States and Canada can access the government’s digital ID service (SANAD)
  • Users’ irises are matched against the national iris database maintained by Jordan’s National Information Technology Center
  • The service is being rolled out in 5 North American cities, enabling approximately 200,000 Jordanians to use government services without returning to their home country
  • An Android iris scanner and integrated software perform identity verification in real time

South Korea: Mobile Resident Registration Cards to Be Introduced

South Korea will introduce mobile resident registration cards in December 2024.

Key points:

  • Based on the revised Resident Registration Act taking effect on December 27, 2024
  • Available to South Korean citizens aged 17 and older
  • Resident registration information is managed through a smartphone app
  • Aims to streamline administrative procedures
