On July 8, 2024 (Monday), I will appear at the 9th Remittance and Payments Working Group meeting, “Latest Trends in Digital ID,” hosted by the Fintech Association.
At this meeting, I will explain international discussions on digital ID in government, the current state of Japan’s response to digital ID, and the long-term outlook for society.

■ Masanori Kusunoki
Director-General, Digital Agency
Common Functions for a Digital Society
After working at Microsoft, the Cabinet Secretariat, Yahoo, MUFG, and others, he became Director-General and Head of the Common Functions for a Digital Society Group at the Digital Agency upon its establishment in 2021.
His responsibilities include the My Number system, the two deposit and savings account acts, municipal system standardization, base registries, the Electronic Signatures Act, and the Electronic Power of Attorney Act.
On the government’s AI strategy team, he is responsible for establishing an environment for the use of generative AI by administrative agencies.
From 2011 to 2021, while at the Cabinet Secretariat, he worked on building the Information Provision Network System, Mynaportal, the COCOA contact-confirmation app, the VRS vaccination record system, and others.
■ Nat Sakimura
Chairman, OpenID Foundation
Executive Partner, Tokyo Digital Ideas Corporation
He works on the international standardization of digital identity and privacy-related technologies.
Chairman of the U.S.-based OpenID Foundation since 2011. Chairman of MyData Japan since 2019.
Digital Special Advisor to the Japan Fair Trade Commission since 2021.
His book Digital Identity and co-authored book Unsolved Problems of Web3 explain what digital identity is and explore its future direction.
■ Yoshiaki Yanagi
Managing Director, Fintech Association
Founder, paild Inc.
After completing the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at the University of Tokyo, he joined the Investment Banking Division of J.P. Morgan Securities in 2011. After advising mainly domestic and overseas technology companies on M&A and fundraising, he founded Handii, Inc. (now paild Inc.) in August 2017 and served as Representative Director, President and CEO until March 2024.
He became a director of the Fintech Association in October 2021.
■ Takafumi Ochiai

Senior Partner Attorney, Prototype Policy Institute, Atsumi & Sakai
He graduated from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University, and passed the former bar examination while enrolled in its Graduate School of Science and Technology.
He worked for approximately 9 years in the Tokyo and Beijing offices of Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, handling international disputes and insolvency, intellectual property, overseas investment, and other matters.
Since joining his current firm, he has advised businesses in finance, healthcare, real estate, MaaS, IT, and other industries and worked on building new systems, while serving on many boards and committees for government and private organizations.
