[Brussels, 23rd] The launch of the OpenWallet Foundation was announced late at night on the 23rd, Japan time.
The OpenWallet Foundation is an open source organization under the Linux Foundation that aims to create common components for digital wallets that hold digital certificates, keys, tickets, cards, etc. The organization has a board of directors, a government advisory council, and a technical advisory council on projects that develop individual features.
The initial board members were Accenture, Futureway, Gen (formerly Norton + Avast), and VISA.1, General Member2Amex and other credit cards are available.
OpenWallet is not a wallet itself, it provides an engine for wallets, just like Blink and others are an engine for web browsers, not the web browser itself, which allows companies to create their own wallets.

In addition, the OpenWallet Foundation does not develop standards. What it does is develop a library of functions required to create a wallet, known as a wallet engine. Companies can use this to create their wallets. If they use the same engine, it is expected that it will be easier to move from one wallet to another.
Speaking at an event accompanying the announcement, OpenID Foundation board chair Nat Sakimura said:
User-centricity and privacy are core principles of the OpenID Foundation, a technical standards organization for digital ID. Just as browsers were 15 years ago, wallets are now at the forefront of achieving these principles. However, wallets alone cannot achieve this. Trust in the wallet code is necessary. To achieve this, the transparency that open source implementations provide is essential, and we look forward to working with the OpenWallet Foundation.
