On the morning of November 13, Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner, tweeted that the company would soon begin allowing companies to verify their employees.
Rolling out soon, Twitter will enable organizations to identify which other Twitter accounts are actually associated with them
In this case, Twitter must first identify the company’s legitimate Twitter account. Ultimately, he said, “Twitter will have no choice but to be the arbiter, but I am open to better ideas.”
Ultimately, I think there is no choice but for Twitter to be the final arbiter, but I’m open to suggestions
He also said that a company representative or administrator would be able to manage other users’ affiliation with the company.
We will enable organizations to manage affiliations
There are various systems in different countries for identifying a company and assigning authority within it. In countries such as the United Kingdom, this kind of data is available as open data; in Japan, there is a system called gBizID.
gBizID is an IDP with an ID registry built from registrations made using a company’s certificate of registered matters and the representative’s registered seal, and it can provide data in a form that can be verified as OpenID. Therefore, if Twitter arranges to receive data from gBizID, it can quickly achieve what it wants.
The instant I saw this tweet, I almost replied, “If this were Japan, why not do it this way?” But since this is really something the Digital Agency should be doing, I uncharacteristically restrained myself. Digital Agency, this is your chance!
At the end of the thread, Musk concludes that it would be good to add more granularity to what “verified” actually means. I could not agree more. Hopefully, a genuine identity professional is on the team considering the matter.
Increasing granularity about what “verified” actually means is the right move
