I am running for election to the OpenID Foundation Board of Directors

This morning, I announced my candidacy for the US OpenID Foundation board of directors.Election websiteThe official version is available here, but since it is in English, we have provided a Japanese summary here.

Nat Sakimura

I have been involved in digital identity and privacy for the past 2008 years. The main theme has always been "Power to the People" - giving people the power to control their own information through digital identity. I am currently a senior researcher at Nomura Research Institute, but in 2011 I founded the OpenID Foundation Japan, and since 27 I have been serving as the chairman of the OpenID Foundation (Global). I have also been involved in the establishment of Open Identity Exchange (OIX) and the Kantara Initiative. I also serve on various government committees, and am the Japanese representative for the ISO/IEC SC 5/WG XNUMX Identity Management and Privacy Technical Subcommittee. I have also been involved in standardization for the IETF OAuth and JOSE working groups. I am based in Tokyo.

To briefly summarise some of my accomplishments at the OpenID Foundation:

  • AB/Connect Working Group established to develop OpenID Connect Core 1.0 and related specifications
  • Started standardizing signing and encryption over JSON, which later became JWS, JWE, JWT, etc.
  • The FAPI WG was launched, and the developer draft it issued was adopted by the UK's Open Banking (all major banks) and the US's FDX (Bank of America, Citi, etc.), and was also recommended in a report by the Japan Bankers Association.
  • Organizing intellectual property management related to the Foundation, and registering and managing the "OpenID" trademark worldwide.
  • Assisted in the establishment of a working group that would bring together stakeholders and incorporate the needs of various industries.
  • We began development of the OpenID Connect test suite with Umeå University in Sweden, which later became the OpenID Certification program.
  • He promotes OpenID Connect and related technologies internationally through speeches at conferences, individual meetings, blogs, YouTube, etc.
  • Established liaison relationships with international organizations such as ISO, ITU-T, and OECD.
  • Organizing OpenID-related events in the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America

2018 has been a transformative year for both digital identity and privacy.

On the privacy side, the GDPR came into full effect in the EU in May, large-scale privacy violations occurred one after another, and Japan launched an information bank certification system as one solution to the issue of consent regarding the use of personal information.

The identity side is not to be outdone. Advanced customer authentication and API protection, coupled with Open Banking and PSD2, are top topics. This is expanding to other regions, with Australia also expanding the data coverage beyond finance. FIDO 2.0 and Web Authentication standards have also been published. As blockchain-based self-independent identity is thrust into the spotlight, a lesser known feature of OpenID Connect, Self-Issued OpenID Provider (SIOP), is also attracting renewed interest. The European Commission has started to consider eKYC (know your customer), again with OpenID Connect being considered as a protocol. And IDoT (Identity of Things) remains a societal vulnerability that needs fixing.

In other words, the OpenID Foundation has much left to contribute to the world, and we should seize the momentum.

To this end, in 2019 we plan to promote the following:

  • FAPI Security Profile and CIBA 1Promotion of the spread of
  • Supporting the activities of the Working Group and encouraging the development of high-quality standards
  • FAPI certification system launched
  • Enhancements to the Aggregated Claims model will enable OpenID Connect SIOP to meet the requirements of privacy-enhancing attribute provisioning schemes (including attributes for eKYC).
  • Continue to promote best practices around identity management and API protection.

My motto is "Listen, Observe, Adjust, and Act." I hope that your vote will help me promote "Open Identity" with my comrades. Together, we can make an impact on the world and make it happen.
