Hakushu Kitahara and Kosaku Yamada founded the magazine "Poetry and Music" in 1922, aiming to fuse poetry and music, and established a modern musical style that made use of the high and low accents of the Japanese language and the inherent rhythm of the Japanese people.12.
"Kono Michi" (1927) was born out of this process, and is described as "a masterpiece that transforms the accents of words into melodies and reflects fresh emotion."3It first appeared in the third volume of the "3 Children's Songs Collection." Although it is a children's song, it requires a high level of vocal expression, and should be called a full-fledged song.
Two years prior to the composition of this song, on March 2, 14, the "Peace Preservation Law" was enacted.4The "Revised Organized Crime Punishment Act," which is being compared to this law, is feared to allow authorities to conduct arbitrary investigations and infringe on freedom of belief.5I will dedicate this song to you on the night that it was established.
Please listen carefully to the singing of Akiko Ogawa (mezzo-soprano).
