The 10th European Identity & Cloud Conference (EIC 2016) will be held in Munich from May 10, 2016 through the 13th.

I will participate in a panel discussion called Killing the Password . The other panelists are:

  • Stina Ehrensvard, founder and CEO of Yubico and the person responsible for pushing FIDO U2F
  • Ian Glazer, Senior Director at Salesforce, IDESG board member, and my noodle buddy
  • Tony Nadalin, Chief Security Architect at Microsoft and Mr. FIDO 2.0

The session description is:

We all understand that using usernames and passwords for access control is dangerous and outdated in today’s world, where everything is interconnected, and that a new approach is needed. But how can we make passwords a relic of the past? There have been many announcements proclaiming that “the password is dead,” and alternatives to passwords have in fact been available for years. However, they have been isolated, non-standardized approaches. Now there is new momentum: initiatives such as FIDO are beginning to provide solutions that go beyond individual vendors, and it seems that we are drawing closer to the end of passwords. But to understand why passwords continue to be used, we need to understand why the market has failed so far. We must also consider the usability, PR, and rollout strategies required for a solution that will finally kill the password. Possible discussion topics include:

  • What alternatives to passwords exist, and what is their current status?
  • What is needed to implement them (software, hardware, and infrastructure)?
  • The technical challenges of rolling out a passwordless service
  • How can you implement such a project and gain support for it within your organization? (What are the triggers for stakeholders?)
  • How can we change users’ behavior and mindset regarding passwords?
  • Should you implement FIDO v1, or wait for v2?

The bold, underlined section is my assignment. And apparently there may or may not be a battle between Ian and Tony. There might even be a battle between Madame FIDO v1 and Mister FIDO v2.
