Privacy Trust Frameworks and the Personal Data Utilisation
The Act on the Protection of Personal Information was revised for the first time in 12 years. Although the amended Act clarifies the definition of personal information by introducing the concept of personal identification codes and makes other changes, provisions for handling information according to the privacy-impact risk arising from the nature of the personal information—apart from provisions related to special care-required personal information—have been deferred until the revision in 3 years. Meanwhile, when handling personal information, it is not enough simply to look at the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. In addition to complying with other laws and regulations, efforts must also be made to avoid provoking a public backlash. Ensuring transparency and accountability in how information is handled is therefore essential. Privacy trust frameworks, which label information-handling practices according to risk, can help achieve this, and further initiatives are anticipated.
The Symposium on Biometrics, Recognition and Authentication in Tokyo is a symposium covering biometrics and related research fields. It will be held from November 12 through the 13th at the Takeda Building, Hongo Campus, the University of Tokyo . Further information is available here[1], so I encourage everyone to join us.
