The first thing I did after arriving at Munich Airport this morning was get a SIM for my iPhone 4. My iPhone 4 is SIM-unlocked, so I can use a local SIM. After leaving the baggage claim area in Terminal 2, turn right, and you will find a shop like the one below on the right. They sell Micro SIMs for the iPhone 4 here. It costs €19.90. A micro-SIM adapter is included as well. However, since all the instructions and other materials are in German and I cannot read them, I had the man at the shop activate it for me.

But that alone is not enough. You need to go to the checkout at the EDEKA supermarket across the way, show them the SIM package, and pay an additional €20. They then give you a receipt with a PIN-NUMMER printed on it, and you take it back to the man at the shop.

Using this, have him activate the Daten-Flat. For 30 days, it costs 19.80€.

However, activation alone does not connect you to the internet. You need to configure the APN and other settings. These were quite difficult to find, so I will make a note of them here.

1. APN: internet.eplus.de
2. Username: blau
3. Password: blau

The MMS settings are as follows.

1. APN: mms.eplus.de
2. Username: blau
3. Password: blau
4. MMSC: http://mms/eplus:5080
5. MMS-Proxy: 212.23.97.153:8080

Do not enter anything in the MMS size limit field.

You should now be able to communicate.

Blau.de also supports tethering, so it is possible to connect by using the iPhone 4 as a Personal Hotspot.

I later discovered that there is also a plan called Tagesflat for 1 day at 2.4€. Apparently you only need to set the APN to tagesflat.eplus.de. This would probably be a better deal for a short stay. When I tried setting it up, I started getting a barrage of SMS messages saying, “Die Buchung der Tagesflatrate in Kombination mit Ihrer bereits gebuchten Option ist nicht möglich. (It cannot be used at the same time as the plan you have already purchased.)” ⇚ This is where I am now.

What should I do?

Now, this Daten-Flat (on the website it is apparently called Internet Flat XXL) is a plan that automatically renews every 30 days. Therefore, I need to cancel this contract when I return home from Germany. To do so, go to www.blau.de and log in. You use your Handynummer and Internet Passwort to log in. They are written on the paper to which the SIM was attached. After logging in, the plan-change page appears. I believe you can cancel the contract by clicking “zur Abbestellung” there. Of course, I have not clicked it and tried it yet.
