There was one problem. Although it had been nearly 2 weeks since I bought my MacBook, its AirMac would not connect properly via WEP to a Netgear WGR614 v4. I had no choice but to use open access, but today even that stopped working. I had felt ill since early morning and slept all day; when I tried to connect in the evening and could not, I thought misfortunes pile up.

I still wanted internet access, so I tried many things, but nothing worked. The Japanese Netgear site even said that it might not connect from a Mac. Just as I thought I might have to buy an AirMac Express, I found firmware on the English site that was considerably newer than that on the Japanese site. The user interface would become English, but that was far preferable to incomprehensible Japanese, so I downloaded and installed it.

As a result, the WGR614 v4 firmware was upgraded to V5.0_07. (The Japanese version is 3.47.) WPA-PSK is now supported as well.

I then configured the WGR614 v4 to use WPA-PSK. On the Mac side, I set WPA Personal. The password was the same on both.

I turned MacBook AirMac off once and turned it on again, and, remarkably, it connected properly.

It really is worth updating firmware. At the same time, it makes one wonder what Netgear Japan is doing.

Incidentally, the WGR614 has various versions. I happen to use v4, but there are versions up to v7. However, firmware compatibility and upgradeability do not exist between these versions. It seems better to think of them as different models rather than versions.
