Walking through the city after the rain, I find that the cherry trees are already in leaf.
At my age, I cannot help wondering how many more times I will be able to see the cherry blossoms. Perhaps because of that, I feel that I have come to appreciate the beauty of cherry trees in leaf more than before.
Yet when I turn through the seasonal word almanac for haiku about cherry trees in leaf,
utterly idle—cherry trees in leaf.
—Kondō Inui
Cherry trees in leaf—
someday people rest
along the riverbank.
—Inahata Teiko
Cherry trees in leaf—
a lodger staying two days in Nara.
—Yosa Buson
Cherry trees in leaf—
a secret midday romp.
—Nagai Kafū
there are many peaceful examples like these, and few that evoke loneliness. Is my way of feeling unusual…?
Cherry trees in leaf—
counting how many more times.
