As I have repeatedly said before, conventional military wisdom apparently holds that when ground forces attack, they should not be met with regular forces.
The reason is that, if the attacking country is rational, it will presumably attack with overwhelming force of at least 3 times the defender’s strength, leaving no chance of victory.
In that case, the recommended course is apparently to stop resisting quickly and go underground, then begin fighting once the occupation starts. Civilians essentially become the force, and they target the occupier when its members are isolated.
If this is done, the occupier gradually becomes unable to leave its bases, the cost of occupation rises enormously, and it is forced to withdraw.
This is apparently the conventional pattern of modern warfare. Seen that way, both Afghanistan and Iraq are developing very much in line with that pattern.
