Sorry. This is an after-the-fact report.
Early this morning, I gave a talk at the OpenID Foundation’s Virtual Workshop—its first such event. I have included the agenda below. A video should be released in due course.
It was a whirlwind introduction to each WG, but it was very interesting. To everyone who joined from Japan, thank you for staying with us until 4 in the morning.
I do have one regret… Since we had the opportunity, we should all have turned on our video and taken a commemorative photo. I will try not to forget next time.
Still, last week was EIC, this week was this workshop, next week is the FDX meeting, and the week after that may be Identiverse. Even though I am in Japan, I am completely jet-lagged, and I still work during the daytime too. It really is a case of “Can you fight for 24 hours?” What, is that dated? It is, isn’t it? This was a Regain commercial made famous around the time of Japan as No. 1, with the jingle, “Can you fight for 24 hours? Businessman—Japanese businessman.” For younger readers, I have embedded the commercial, which positively reeks of the bubble era.
At that time, Japan’s per-capita GDP had surpassed that of the United States and was effectively the highest in the world. There was real momentum. At the same time, it also reminds me that women had not yet begun participating fully in the workforce. Even at the company I joined, recruitment of women for career-track positions began in 1990. Until then, the prevailing expectation was that women would work for a few years and then marry. Also, in the tropical-island version, the man gets off the plane, has a lei placed around his neck, and is kissed on the cheek. Airports or someone probably really did offer that kind of service then—even in the United States.
One more. This version may best capture the image of the Japanese salaryman at the time. It may be the one that left the strongest impression on me. He climbs buildings and does all sorts of things, but no CGI was used at all. Amazing. Well, it was just before the dawn of CGI.
