The government will establish a call center within the Cabinet Office around October for the “My Number System,” which manages social security benefits and tax payments using 1 personal identification number. Ahead of the system’s launch in January 2016, the center will respond to inquiries from companies and individuals and promote awareness of the system.

マイナちゃんThis appears to be part of an awareness campaign beginning in October, prompted by insufficient public understanding of the My Number System. Awareness efforts have already been conducted through documents, seminars, and the website[1]. By also accepting inquiries by voice, the initiative may also be intended to reach groups that previous efforts have failed to reach.

The website includes frequently asked questions (FAQ), but it is easy to imagine occasions when people may still want to make an inquiry because they do not fully understand the answers. At such times, it would be very helpful to be able to ask questions by telephone, email, or an inquiry form. Many overseas websites today also use call centers to answer questions through chat. It would be even better if this kind of support became available as well. I have high hopes for further expansion of the service.
