The phrase “the lost 20 years” is often repeated in the media, but I wondered whether it was really true, so I looked at the data.

People say various things, such as that countries other than Japan are growing. Taking that into account, I used purchasing-power-parity dollars and real values, since there is little point in looking at nominal values.

This past 1 years or so have certainly been dismal, but otherwise perhaps they were not bad enough to call “lost.” The annual growth rate was about 3.5%.

So, when I have some free time, I will take a more serious look at the figures. ← When will that be?!
