A frightening article I read on Kim Cameron’s Identity Weblog.
According to a Symantec report, the going rates for buying and selling people’s identity information in the United States these days are apparently as follows:
A US-issued credit card number (with IVV): US$1–$6
Plus a bank account number, date of birth, and government-issued ID number: US$14–18
Terrifying…
Then again, information on as many as 8 million people was leaked from Dai Nippon Printing in Japan. It surely included credit card numbers, and if the data was used to print statements, it is easy to imagine that it also included addresses. In that case, I suppose those prices are probably about right.
