The Paris Opera will present kabuki for the first time−. A kabuki performance by Ichikawa Danjuro (59) and his eldest son Ebizo (28) will be held at the theater in March next year, and Danjuro and others held a press conference in Tokyo on the 28th.

Danjuro said with a smile, “There could be no greater joy or honor than to add a historic page. I want to stand on the stage proud of Japanese culture.” Ebizo said, “It was my dream to appear at the Opera. I feel both joy and tension.”

Kabuki performances in Paris have been held in the past, including Ebizo’s name-succession performance at the Théâtre national de Chaillot in October 2004. However, this will be the first time kabuki is performed at the venerable Opera, a symbol of Paris that was completed in 1875.
