A common, harmless virus that everyone has experienced infection with—adeno-associated virus type 2, AAV2—has been found to be an excellent agent that can target and kill only cancer cells. A team at Pennsylvania State University in the United States announced the finding. It is said that this may also lead to the development of a new treatment. (Asahi.com)

It appears to have been discovered from the fact that women infected with AAV2 were less likely to develop cervical cancer. When it was actually cultured together with cancer cells, all of the cancer cells had died after one week, while normal cells were unaffected. If it can be used well, it seems likely to become a dream cancer drug.

The remaining question is how to deliver AAV2 to the affected area.

Cancer eradication was once said to be possible by 2010. Is that becoming realistic?

On the other hand, there has been no progress with HIV.
