According to “Life of a Japanese Expat Wife in Canada”, a toxic substance seems to have entered the water supply in Stratford, Ontario. For the time being, people are apparently not even supposed to wash their hands, so it must be serious. When something like this happens, it makes you realize just how dependent we are on water.

I used to live in Kenya, so I am accustomed to having no water. If necessary, I can wash my body with only about 5 cm of water in a bucket. But not many people can do that. Come to think of it, I had stored many jerry cans of water.

When asked what resource is most precious, freshwater is said to be unquestionably the answer. We could manage without oil, but people cannot live without water. Freshwater is extraordinarily precious. People often say that water costs more than oil, but of course it does.

Only on Sunday, I had heard from a Canadian that Canada was beginning to view freshwater as a valuable strategic resource, so learning of this incident was particularly striking.
