Weather
——-
Early November was extraordinarily cold, about 10 degrees colder than usual, making me dread what lay ahead. Temperatures remained below freezing throughout the 1th, and we even had blizzards. By late in the period things seemed to return to normal and the snow melted, which was a relief, but today there was another blizzard. The temperature is currently -9 degrees. For roughly the next 1 weeks, it seems temperatures will again be below average. This may be a cold winter.

NIFTY-Serve
———–
I have one or two questions for Mr. Fujita.

1) Is it possible to forward mail automatically from NIFTY to WIDE?
2) Is it possible to clip news and other material and receive it by email?

I was just curious.

For Mr. Umemuro: Is there a good way to receive Japanese news via the Internet or a Bitnet LISTSERV?

Shareware I Like Recently
————————-
Did the Shareware/Freeware list arrive?
One program I like recently is StuffitExpand ver.3.0.
It properly decompresses BinHex, CompactPro, and Stuffit files in one step. I download files from the Internet, and what I find reassuring is that it handles the whole sequence without needing instructions. It is a Drag&Drop app. If you specify a folder, it automatically decompresses it too.

Another favorite is DeskTop-Printer.
It is also a Drag & Drop App: drop a document on the printer icon and it prints it. The advantage is not having to switch between printer and Fax in Chooser every time.

When You Have Something to Send
——————————-

If you address it to:

〒240
Attn: Natsuhiko Sakimura
c/o Mr. Kono, Human Resources Department
Nomura Research Institute, Ltd.
134 Godo-cho, Hodogaya-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa

it will reach me here by OCS 2 times a month.
Cheaper than Air Mail, right?

Christmas
———
London is thoroughly in the Christmas spirit.

Perhaps because Canadian winters are so severe, all shopping districts are indoors. It is as if Shinjuku’s underground shopping streets had been built above ground. People drive to these shopping malls and shop in their warm interiors. Since the latter half of November, the many malls have all been filled with Christmas decorations. Every mall also has a Santa Claus, and children have their pictures taken with him. This too must be one aspect of Canadian subculture.

Evolution
———
One of the greatest shocks since coming here was hearing people disparage Darwin’s theory of evolution. Christians say, “Adam and Eve are a hypothesis, but Darwin’s theory of evolution is also only a hypothesis.” Chinese students say, “The idea that humans evolved from monkeys is ridiculous.”

Both are Ph.D students.

I was speechless….

The UWO ~= Keio Theory
———————-
I knew nothing about this, but Canadian students say that Queens University and the University of Western Ontario (UWO) are universities for spoiled rich kids. This tendency is reportedly especially strong at UWO because it focuses mainly on medicine, law, and Business Administration. According to a Canadian classmate, wealthy children attend, become even wealthier, and graduate. It is apparently something like Harvard or Stanford in the United States. Perhaps for that reason, its undergraduate division has acquired the unflattering nickname “party school.”

Business Administration, on the other hand, seems very famous. I mentioned Harvard and Stanford above; UWO holds an annual joint competition with both schools and reportedly has won for the past 2 years. Its social reputation also seems to be rising considerably.

Lottery
——-
Recently I have been wishing I might win the lottery. Then I could spend my days leisurely making the music I like, writing, and sometimes reading or writing papers. As of yesterday, the first prize had grown to $5400000. It would be nice to win.

Emu Proteus/2
————-
It finally seems to have shipped last Thursday. Perhaps it will arrive this week?

And that is all for today.
Mr. Umemuro, what happened with the Duo?
