The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has announced plans to begin making the My Number Health Insurance Card available on smartphones around spring 2025. The new system is expected to support both Android and iPhone.
Key Points:
- Launch: Planned for spring 2025
- Supported devices: Android (Google) and iPhone (Apple)
- Preparation by medical institutions: New reader equipment must be installed
How to Use It:
- At the medical institution’s card reader with facial recognition, the patient selects the smartphone option
- The patient holds the smartphone over the dedicated reader
- The patient consents on screen to providing information, completing the procedure

The plan was announced on September 30, during the 16:00 to 18:30 meeting of the 183th Social Security Council Medical Insurance Subcommittee. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare expects this to encourage use of the My Number Health Insurance Card by allowing people to visit medical institutions without carrying a physical My Number Card.
The ministry plans to promote adoption through demonstration projects going forward.
