East Africa actually has a thriving mobile-payment ecosystem. It is also available on the Safari.com SIM I used this time. It is provided as a SIM application. The communications protocol it uses (?) is apparently called USSD. It is a kind of secure SMS. It is strange that it is hardly used at all in Japan.
