While making a flyer for a jazz concert by Seiji Endo, I was shocked to discover that I had completely forgotten how to do it. I only do this about once a quarter, so perhaps because of my age, I quickly forget how to create print-ready artwork in Pages.

Perhaps the answer is that I should use Illustrator from the outset (which would also let me use templates supplied by the printing company), but for quickly putting something together, Pages is obviously more convenient. It has stylish templates too.

So here are my notes on submitting a PDF created in Pages for printing.

Procedure

  1. Launch Pages and open a new document.
  2. Open the Page Setup dialog from [ファイル]-[ページ設定].
  3. Set the target printer to any printer.
  4. Make a note of the paper size. For A4, it is 21.0cm x 29.7cm.
  5. Under Paper Size, select “Manage Custom Sizes.”
  6. Using the size from step 4 above, create a custom size with 2cm added to each dimension.
  7. Create the artwork.
  8. Export it as PDF/X.
  9. Open it in Acrobat.
  10. Select [アドバンスド]-[印刷工程]-[ページのトリミング].
  11. Select “TrimBox” from the pull-down menu.
  12. Under “Margin Controls,” check “Constrain Proportions” and set the margin to 10mm. Set the page range to “All,” then click “OK.”
  13. Select [アドバンスド]-[印刷工程]-[トンボを追加] to open the dialog.
  14. Check corner crop marks and center crop marks. Select InDesignJ1 for the style. Set the page range to “All,” then click “OK.”
  15. Save under a different name. Use PDF/X as the format. In the detailed settings, set PDF/X-1a and set the trapping key to False. Choose the output condition as appropriate. (Japan Color 2001 Coated, for example.)
  16. Also create a JPEG preview of the printed image.
  17. Put the PDF above and the JPEG into 1 Zip file.
  18. Send it! (This time I used Print Express.)

That is quite a few steps.
