At IIW2007, Sun Microsystems announced to all OpenID developers that Sun would not assert its patents against development performed in accordance with the OpenID specifications. (This does not apply to parties that take actions harmful to OpenID development.) This unilateral license is said to be irrevocable (Sun will not later say that it has withdrawn it).
Regarding copyright, Sun is reportedly considering a Creative Commons License.
The announcement is expected to be made public shortly.
