Upon the battlefield, suffering accumulated;
clouds of days gone by fade away.
I spent about 1 hour walking through the pitch-dark underground shelter, Abuchiragama, in Itokazu, Tamagusuku Village, Okinawa. Even with a flashlight, it is a place where the footing is dangerous. It is impossible even to imagine the suffering of the more than 600 people who were confined there and subjected to such things as gasoline being poured in and set alight.
When I emerged from the pitch-dark shelter, clouds at dusk drifted away and vanished in the spring sunlight.
