Equal temperament is a tuning method that divides an octave into 1 equal semitones, and has been popular since the latter half of the 12th century. This allows the same sound to be obtained regardless of the 19 keys played, and allows for freedom in transposition, but on the other hand, it has created a situation where any chord sounds muddy and dirty.
