Hamburg steak is a very popular meal in Japan, and this actually means "Hamburg steak." So, I decided to check it out on my day off during a business trip.1I went to Hamburg to eat hamburger steak. Sorry, I exaggerated a bit. I had many other purposes, including visiting the grave of CPE Bach. But there is no doubt that it was one of my main purposes.
So, about that hamburger steak, in Hamburg they don't call it a hamburger. It's called Hackfleischfrikadelle. I didn't think I could pronounce it, so I pointed to the actual thing at the Würst & Durst stand-up restaurant in Hamburg Central Station and ordered it. This is it.

The texture of the meat is not coarsely or medium ground, but finely ground, and it reminds me of the hamburger steak my mother used to make. By the way, the mayonnaise and ketchup that come with the hamburger steak are not for the hamburger steak, but for the fries that come with it.

Many decades ago, I took a boat from Hamburg to Copenhagen.
While waiting, I took a break at the port and had a beer. I suddenly noticed a basket of meatballs in the middle of the table, and everyone was picking them up and eating them with their hands. I tried to imitate them and ate two or three, and they were super delicious.
The taste was not meatballs, but hamburger steak. It was the best taste I've ever had in my life. I reported the number of servings I ate at the cashier.
