Unlimited data usage with France's Orange Mobicarte (with its catches)

I already have a SIM-locked iPhone 4s, so I thought it would be a waste to pay 2000 to 3000 yen a day to Softbank, so I went to the Orange store in Montparnasse and got a SIM. It took about 700 minutes including waiting time, but the staff spoke English well, so there was no problem. I said I also wanted a data plan, and they told me to call the call center. The number was 700. However, when I called XNUMX, an error occurred. I went to the Louvre right away, so I had to wait until I got back to the hotel to set it up.

On the way back, I bought a mobicarte for €10 at Monoprix and received a 14-digit prepaid number. When I got back to the hotel, I said,Unlimited data for 1 euros a week in France! / Trying out mobicarte's flat-rate data planI tried setting it up while referring to ".

The menu had changed and I struggled a bit, but I managed to set it up and was able to use 3G mobile communication. Suddenly, I noticed that the tethering menu (General > Network > Set up Internet Sharing) was also displayed! I tried to set it up at the same time, but it seems that I have to go to www.orange.fr and do some additional settings. The user name is my phone number. The password was sent to me by SMS. I left it for now.

However, the next morning

Vous devez recharger votre compte avant le 10/05/2012 pour conserver votre numéro de téléphone mobicarte.

That's strange. I had €5 on my account, and after adding €10, I got €7 for one week of unlimited data (Internet Max Semeine), so I should have €8 left.

So I went to the Orange website and found information about how I'd used it up to now.

Orange Mobicarte Charge History

After some research, I found out that the reason is that Internet Max does not include email (SMTP/IMAP/POP3). Since there is no way to stop email on an iPhone, this is no good.Email is a separate menu, so you have to subscribe from there first.

I got it♪... orz

I had no choice but to go to the Orange website and try to recharge my card. It looked like I could do it at first glance, but when I got back from Verified by Visa,

Une erreur technique est survenue pendant le paiement de votre commande, aussi la prise en compte de votre carte bancaire est actuellement impossible.

I was told that and was unable to complete the procedure. It seems like it would be best to buy mobicarte at the store.

Fortunately, the next day, The Meridien Etoile I was able to buy this at the convenience store. According to Wannabe Geek Girl, I should say "Je voudrais recharge de mobicarte d'orange, 15 euros" (Je voudrais recharge de mobicarte d'orange, 15 euros), so I memorized it and said it. The cashier was Japanese, so I only had to say "I'd like a recharge for my Mobicarte for Orange, please, XNUMX euros" in Japanese.

Once you pay, you will receive a receipt like this:

Mobicarte Recharge Receipt

Enter the 14-digit number on the receipt as #124#39540095xxxx83# (x = hidden) to complete the charge. (The receipt says to dial #123#. When you do this, a menu will appear and you will have to operate the screen by following the instructions, but since it's all in French, I think it would be easier to just enter #124#14-digit recharge number#.)

Now it's time to set up your option plan.

On the dial screen, press #123# to make a call, and the following screen will appear. (I forgot to take a screen capture at the beginning, so I took one after I was done, so all the amounts shown are 5.00EUR after the call was completed.)

So, "Reply"[1]) will display the following. Here, 1=Menu, so enter 1 and press "Reply" in the upper right corner.

Then,

Click "Reply", enter 4=Vos bons plans (the plans you can currently sign up for) as shown on the screen, and then click "Reply".

As a result, the following screen will appear:

When you click Reply, the following screen will appear. The first thing you want to do is set up your email subscription plan. 2=Vos messages are SMS and not email, so select 3=Votre multimedia.

On the next screen, 5=Option Mail is the flat rate for email, so press Reply and select it on the next screen.

(I missed taking a screen capture.) Click Reply, and since 5=Option Mail, enter 5 to reply. Then, the following screen will appear.

You will be able to watch e-mail and other content for 1 euros per month, so click "Reply" without hesitation. On the next screen, 1 = Souscrire (subscribe), so enter XNUMX and reply. Then, the following confirmation screen will appear.

1 = Validator (confirmation), so enter 1 on the next screen after pressing Reply.

So, when you click Reply, you will see that you have signed up for the email flat-rate option for 6 euros, which will be deducted from your prepaid amount.

Of course it's OK, so reply and enter 1=Suite (next).

This completes the process. The email option will be activated within 48 hours.

Just to be on the safe side, press Reply and enter 9=Accueil (return to top)

Next is Other Internet Options. (By the way, this is where Exchange is.) Similarly, select 4=Vos bons plans.

As mentioned before, it is Votre multimedia.

Enter 3.

Since you have already purchased the email option, it will not appear in the menu.

Since my stay will be more than one week, I will select 4=Option Internet max.

Then, you will see that you can surf the Internet and Orange World for 9 euros a month.

1=Select Suite (next screen).

I don't know why they keep telling me "you can do this, you can do that" so much, but they keep telling me all sorts of things. I wonder if there's some kind of legal limit on the number of screens.

Complaining won't get you anywhere, so select 1=Souscrire (apply).

Apparently the monthly flat rate of 9 euros option is automatically renewed on the application date every month. Well, since it's a prepaid plan, I don't think it will be renewed unless you put money in.

1 = Validator (verification), so enter 1 without hesitation.

Then, the message "You have signed up for Internet max for 9 euros. This amount has been debited from your account" will appear.

1=Suite (next screen).

You will then see the message, "Your Internet max option will be activated within 48 hours."

8=Select Accueil (to the top screen)

It's finished.

However, it doesn't seem like this will take effect until 48 hours have passed.

I went to the Orange website (www.orange.fr) to check and it was immediately enabled.

While I'm at it, I'll copy and paste the detailed explanation of Internet Max and Mail Option.
