US Patient Identification System (PIDS) Project Interim Report

On July 7th, at the OpenID Foundation Japan meeting, the "Patient ID System Project (PAtient ID SWe have recently provided an interim report on the "Personal Information and Systems Development Project (PIDS Project)."

The "PIDS Project" is a pilot project led by the Kantara Initiative and the eCitizen Foundation as part of the policy review of "networking the medical field" promoted by the US Federal Government, with OpenID Foundation Japan also providing funding and participating. Specifically, the project is a study of a model that connects data on the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN), which has been under consideration since 2004, with PHR (Personal Health Record) systems such as Microsoft Health Vault and Dossia Personal Health Platform, and allows individuals (patients) to control the flow of information between these systems. Individuals will be able to use existing credentials such as Google, and step-up authentication will be available as necessary.

This is an interim report on Phase 2011 (determination of the pilot scope, from February 2 onwards).

The first half is a review of NHIN itself, and the second half is the contents of the PIDS project.
